Colon And Rectal Surgery
Colon and rectal surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery that focuses on diseases of the colon (large intestine), rectum and anus. The wide-ranging scope of the discipline includes malignancy, inflammatory conditions, functional problems, and anorectal problems.
The colorectal surgeons at NYU Langone Long Island Surgical Associates are experts at treating a wide variety of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus. They have special expertise in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) to treat complex and difficult conditions, including colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), rectal prolapse, and some functional bowel disorders. Approaching these extensive operations with minimal access surgery leads to less pain, faster recovery, decreased postoperative adhesions, and fewer risks than ever before.
In addition to incorporating state-of-the-art technology to surgical care, our surgeons have extensive experience in reoperative abdominal surgery, those operations that may require a tradition open incision to complete, and often needed for major complications of previous surgery. Each patient, whether coming for a large problem or small, will receive compassionate and individualized care.
The surgeons at our program are part of a multi-disciplinary team at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. As such every patient has access to the full breadth of services at the hospital. Patients with colorectal cancer have access to a world-class group of oncologists, radiation oncologists and specialized surgeons that coordinate their care with individual, departmental and hospital-wide meetings. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease similarly have access to state-of-the-art medical care in addition to surgery.
Under the leadership of renowned colorectal surgeon Dr. Toyooki Sonoda, the colorectal surgery team at NYU Langone Long Island Surgical Associates is dedicated to patient care and the utmost in quality and safety.
